A number of UE-UK Members visited Vobster Quay, Somerset, UK for an exploratory dive of the newly opened inland diving facility. The trip was organized by Stuart Edmonstone. Most people got lost getting there as the site is set amongst rural villages and some signposts haven't been put back after the war or parts of the sign have fallen off. The Ordinance Survey reference for Vobster is ST 705 497 ( taken from a GPS in the lower carpark ). is useful for a detailed map. As you get to Vobster village, there are the Vobster Quay has its own Website @ for further details and current news/information. Address: Vobster Quay Diving Centre. Upper Vobster, Mells. Somerset BA3 5SA The site itself is still in the process of being converted to a diving facility when we dived there, and the photos reflect that. The diving teams were:
All the divers had a successful dive and reported the site/water as very diveable down to about 20m. below that is a thick layer of silt, which reduces visibility down to virtually nil. None of the divers ventured below 20m for that very reason. Some of the silt is going to be moved by u/w pump, but years of a concrete company washing out its trucks into the quarry, creating the silt, isn't going to be 'fixed' in the short term. Divers reported the water temperature to be a balmy 8degC. All of the divers said they would return to Vobster, although getting there took most people over an hour. From Poole, the journey time was just over an hour and a half ( 60 miles ). A selection of photos from the mornings diving: Click on thumbnails to enlarge |
